The wishful thinking is for a bicycle trail to be built along the shoreline of Mobile Bay across the southeast end of Brookley Airport linking Arlington Park with McNally Park. Once a year organizers arrange for the public to be able to ride along the normally gated and locked Old Bayfront Road owned by the Mobile Airport Authority and/or the USA Foundation. Waterfront views and access are relatively limited along the Western Shore of Mobile Bay.
The unfortunate reality is much of this once bustling area is now blighted. Houses sit vacant. Grass grows tall along the neglected right-of-way. The once popular Brookley Golf Course is vacant and overgrown.
Want to go to the beach in Mobile? You have to go to Chickasabogue Park, Dauphin Island, or over to Fairhope.
Meanwhile, the valuable 1-2 mile long Mobile Bay Beach neglected by the USA Foundation remains inaccessible, deserted, overgrown, and polluted with trash and debris.
What a wonderful way to utilize Mobile's rare beach assets eh?
