Then I think of Mobile's South Side with its 1.6 mile bicycle trail with its unsafe hairpin turns, no beaches, no pier, and no shops. You can try to ride the sidewalk along Dauphin Island Parkway but in some cases there is no sidewalk, or the unmaintained sidewalk is overgrown and only a foot wide, or the crepe myrtles and vines forces one off the sidewalk because the sidewalk and right-of-way growth is not maintained. The difference between the Eastern Shore and the Western Shore of Mobile is like night and day. Someone planned for tourism to be an important part of their economy and it certainly wasn't Mobile. That is why when I want to do a serious day's ride (metric century) nearby, I go to the Causeway and ride the Eastern Shore Trail.

Despite its many many driveway and roadway crossings, it is actually a relatively safe way to enjoy bicycle riding because you don't have to ride in the same lane as the traffic and the trail is relatively smooth. There are some nice hills too to remind you how hard the heart can pump. Hehehe.
