A pleasant ride along Bay Front Road. Fall Golden Rod (Solidago) is in bloom and the flowering spikes of Giant Reed (Arundo donax) can be seen. Giant Reed yields 3 times as much ethanol per acre as corn and North Carolina is wanting to use Arundo as a Biofuel. However, three States have already labeled Giant Reed as an invasive species. Arundo has cost California $70,000,000 in eradication efforts in the past two decades. One thing for sure, Giant Reed is rather attractive along the shoreline of Mobile Bay.
