Mobile's Mardi Gras parking lot racket. There used to be a sign at the Mobile Convention Center - Parking $5. Today it was $10. A markup of 100 percent. What if gas stations doubled gas prices just before a hurricane? That would be called price gouging. On the other side of the Convention Center this convenient downtown parking lot owned by the City is completely empty at Parade time because it is locked. Yet on both sides of the Convention Center people were parking on the median next to "No Parking" signs. And the sidewalk becomes an illegal parking lot too. Then I learned yet another parking lot was taken over by the City and was used to store towed cars. Last time I got my vehicle towed it was $45. The City was towing improperly parked cars at Mardi Gras and charging $125 to get it back. That is like three times what I paid for towing. Yes boy, the City of Mobile loves Mardi Gras because it can make lots of money price gouging on parking and towing. |
