The pathetic story behind the attached photo taken yesterday is I have contacted Dollar General Corporate Headquarters three times filing complaints about this specific store for ignoring litter on their property which can ultimately end up in Dog River.
Several complaints about this specific Dollar General Store have been made to the City of Mobile's 3-1-1, like service request # 556773. City of Mobile 3-1-1 responses assure me the litter has been removed but when I go by the Dollar General Store, litter can still be found on the public right-of-way, around the dumpster, in the parking lot, in the detention pond, and always dense along the property line behind the dumpster.
Prior complaints about this Dollar General store litter have been made to the Chamber of Commerce, City Council Members, Keep Mobile Beautiful and Ray Richardson who is the City of Mobile's environmental manager.
News Flash for 3-1-1 advocates - Mobile's 3-1-1 system does not work when it comes to getting Mobile's Polluters, Good Neighbors like Dollar General to keep their property free and clear of litter. The Dollar General Store on Dauphin Island Parkway remains littered.
It is time to form a hardcore Mobile Environmental Anti-litter Network (MEAN) comprising of volunteers who turn up in force picketing in front of trashy businesses like Dollar General making the protest spectacle a magnet for media reporters. Nothing else has worked to address the litter problem.
I believe that when a business is featured on the evening news for their trashy contribution to Mobile's image, that might give them incentive to make some changes in how they deal with litter on their property. It would also give businesses not wanting that kind of publicity a reason to remove the litter from their properties more frequently.
Since use of Mobile's existing Litter Code and complaint systems can't get a single property owner to keep their property free of litter, can I get 200 volunteer picketers?
Please forward a link to this post, or tweet, or facebook those who you think might be interested in stepping up the anti-litter efforts in Mobile through fun, regular, MEAN non-violent picketing protests.
Seriously.
