Yup, the transportation planners in Mobile and at ALDOT have royally fucked the pedestrians in Mobile and continue to fuck them good. Especially the elderly.
Here is a photo taken yesterday of a sad problem facing many pedestrians in Mobile.
No cross walk at an intersection.
Yesterday I watched this gentleman frozen in fear as cars whizzed by in both directions while he stood stranded in the middle of busy Hwy 90 during Friday evening rush hour traffic. In his condition he did not need to be standing in the 90 degree heat with a heat index near 100. He unfortunately couldn't move fast enough across the five lanes to beat the traffic.
And in case you're thinking he was trying to cross in the wrong place, there is no pedestrian crosswalk down at the traffic light either. No telling how far down Hwy 90 where the nearest pedestrian cross walk is.
Eventually one vehicle in the left lane finally stopped to let him cross. But then a vehicle in the right lane whizzing by almost hit him and he had to wait until someone in the right lane finally stopped. During the ordeal there was a lot of rude motorists honking their horn to show their impatience at the traffic holdup. Poor guy.
Welcome to Mobile, a city that continues to fuck pedestrians and bicyclists by usually not including them in people movement corridor designs. No bicycle lanes and as few as possible pedestrian crossings.
Hell, even when there is a pedestrian crosswalk in Alabama, most drivers will not stop for someone standing on the cross walk. That happens to me all the time at Alligator Alley in Spanish Fort and at the Eastern Shore Trail where it crosses scenic Hwy 98 in Fairhope. I stand on the edge of the crosswalk to show my intent to cross but most cars keep speeding right on by.
In other areas of the country drivers surprise me by stopping when I'm even near a cross walk. I am hating living in this backwoods state more and more. There is a reason Alabama is going broke. People are moving to more people friendly States.
