The result of the annual cleanup is no surprise.
The Fall Alabama Coastal Cleanup of 2013 failed to remove about 99 percent
of the garbage from Dog River even though there was a Dog River Cleanup Zone.
Even Dog River Park which was the zone cleanup headquarters was still lined with garbage.
The fact that Dog River is still densely polluted by storm water litter
is not the fault of the volunteer cleanup effort. Trash was removed.
Dog River is still polluted because there is no one removing
the storm water litter from where it accumulates after each heavy rain.
That is the City of Mobile's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) failure to deal with the problem.
All the powers that be in Mobile have put ZERO priority on keeping Dog River clean and it shows.
A $450,000 fine to the City of Mobile by ADEM has resulted in no clean up effort.
A $50,000,000 lawsuit against the City of Mobile by Dog River Clearwater Revival
has resulted in no clean up effort either.
I say it again. Let me reiterate. Just to repeat...
Totally ignoring storm water litter,
some of which is hazardous to the environment,
once it reaches Mobile's waterways
is simply not acceptable anymore.
The only way to restore Dog River
to a healthy natural state
is to remove the storm water litter
on a regular basis
from where it accumulates.
That can not be done without a boat and a worker.
Deal with it Mobile.
The storm water litter photographed below
is ALL located downstream of the City of Mobile's Eslava Creek Litter Trap.
Mobile's DESMI Litter Trap continues to go under water during heavy rain events
allowing most if not all of the storm water litter to escape from the Litter Trap.
Storm water trash is only generated in quantity during heavy rain events.
The City of Mobile does nothing to adjust the Litter Trap to fix the problem.
The City of Mobile does nothing to remove the storm water litter
that escapes downstream each time their cheap ass DESMI Litter Trap fails.
Even a new $100,000 Band-a-Long Litter Trap
isn't going to remove any of this trapped garbage pollution
which is spread out along 8 miles of shoreline
between the Litter Trap and about a mile downstream of Dog River Park.
Mobile Leaders and Environmental Groups are out of touch with reality.
Look at these photos and see how well the Federal Clean Water Act is being administered.
Mobile got no money to clean up the pollution? (Typical Excuse).
It is public trash polluting the waterways. Make the public pay to remove their garbage.
Raise the sales tax or put a tax on the products polluting the waterways
to fund the army of workers needed to keep Mobile's roadsides and waterways litter free.
