Here are a few photos taken Sunday of poor housekeeping around business dumpsters. This just highlights the ineffectness of Mobile's tough new litter codes to get businesses to start being more responsible with disposal of their trash.
Loose trash on the ground by business dumpsters is one source of storm water trash pollution. Wind can easily blow loose trash away to be left polluting the environment elsewhere, typically along nearby vacant lots across the street from the business. A flooding rain then flushes some of that loose trash into nearby creeks.
What ever litter enforcement policy is being used in the City of Mobile is proving to be no incentive at all in getting business dumpster areas clean of trash and litter. Trash belongs in the dumpster - not on the ground.
If businesses open and close their doors 5-7 days a week they can have an employee go by their dumpster area each day to make sure no trash is on the ground and that the dumpster doors or lids are properly shut.
