Local 15 News aired a story about a social media push to turn the money losing Mobile Municipal Auditorium into an Indoor Water Park. Why would something so expensive even be considered?
Well, take the once beautiful Municipal Park Lake. That nice lake was once deep enough to support a paddle boat rental business. Municipal Park Lake is filled by the clean clear waters from Twelvemile Creek and Threemile Creek and would make a nice outdoor water park. Only one problem - Twelve Mile Creek and Three Mile Creek are now used as Garbage Chutes and the Municipal Park Lake is used as a sediment basin for geese poop. No swimming allowed.
Well, take the once beautiful Mobile Bay shoreline which once was an active swimming spot especially around Garrows Bend. Nice sandy beaches have been replaced with garbage strewn beaches as the property owners like the State of Alabama, Alabama State Docks, and the University of South Alabama Foundation ignore the growing pollution on their unused shorelines.
Well, take Dog River Park which has some nice sandy shoreline areas which would make an excellent water park along Dog River. Unfortunately the City of Mobile uses Dog River as a garbage chute and Dog River Park is usually lined with trash. Plus, thanks to Mobile Area Water and Sewer System, Dog River usually gets polluted with raw sewage after heavy rains.
What a shame. Poor City of Mobile residents have no Public Beaches despite its abundance of waterways. Mobilians have to go to Chickasaw Creek for a public swimming beach or 30 miles all the way to Dauphin Island or 30 miles all the way to Fairhope. Do you really think a City that has turned ALL their precious waterway resources into garbage chutes and raw sewage spillways would take any better care of an indoor water park? I doubt it.
A water park is a fine idea as long as the City of Mobile is not involved.
